From Booklist
Gr. 1^-2. This appealing book offers beginning readers a monosyllabic text, a witty story, and brightly colored, cartoonlike artwork. When Hen discovers a huge egg among her little ones, she puts all her eggs in one carriage and wheels it around, asking the other animals if the big egg is theirs. Cat, Dog, Pig, Cow, and Goat all disavow it, but Fox happily proclaims that it's a fox egg and wheels the carriage into his den. In the climax, the bird hatching from the big egg saves the chicks hatching from the little eggs and finds a happy home with their grateful mother hen. Young readers will enjoy the solid construction and humor of the story and the unstudied look and funny details in the illustrations. Librarians may want to have several copies on hand, as this amusing book is a natural for those classroom egg units that roll around every spring. Carolyn Phelan

Many easy readers are really not that easy
By Amy Obermayer
This is a really cute little book for a very beginning reader. Many easy readers are really not that easy. They contain words that are hard to sound out and too much text. Level One varies widely from publisher to publisher and even book to book. This book really is easy. In addition, it's cute and has bright engaging illustrations. I'm very pleased with it and I think it will be a great book to offer to my youngest students.

Great early reader with an actual story!
By Angela
My son has been having a little difficulty reading. He started kindergarten this year, and he has been a little resistent to reading some of the early readers the school has sent home with him. To begin with, he has severe myopia, so it's challenging for him to see the words. But, more importantly, the early readers the school has sent home are really boring. They mainly consist of things like "Dog is Sleepy. The dog gets up. The dog sees cat." He just isn't interested. So, when we pull out the school's early readers, his response has been, "not that again!" I know he'll eventually have to read stuff that he find boring in school. But, right now, I want him to learn to love reading. Big Egg does the trick! The words are nice and big, so he doesn't get frustrated by not being able to see the words. And, there is a cute little story. He especially loves yelling, "SQUAWK" when the big egg hatches. I would love to find more early readers like Big Egg. Any ideas? :)

Fun easy readers that motivate children to read
By Z Hayes
I purchased these books for my 5-year-old daughter who is beginning to read on her own and these Step Into Reading books are excellent as they have a high-interest factor that motivates her to read. The stories are also wonderfully illustrated in full color. This particular story has an "aww" moment, as hen finds a large egg amidst her clutch of regular hen eggs, and wonders whose egg it is, going around the farm asking the other animals if it belongs to them, until she encounters a sly fox!
These Step 1 series are recommended for preschool-K - the stories are in large type and the vocabulary is easy. The stories are also in a rhyming format which makes them easy and fun to read. The full color pictures also provide contextual clues as to the word being used in the text. These early readers have raised my daughter's confidence level in reading, and she is doing so well that I'm purchasing the Step Two books (Preschool-Grade 1). I use these books in conjunction with sight words to reinforce her recognition of common vocabulary.
