A very unique and all-encompassing view of Dynamics

I used Roy’s “Advanced Engineering Dynamics” for a graduate-level dynamics course this past Spring. In short, it was outstanding. I have taken many classes in dynamics and this is, by far, the best textbook I have used. There are many highly unique aspects of this textbook that are worth pointing out.
1. Content and Organization
Roy’s text contains topics all found in a typical dynamics textbook and there is enough information to easily cover two courses. There is a particularly heavy emphasis on kinematics which proves to be highly beneficial for other topics as well. The standard chapters on forces, Newton-Euler equations, energy, and momentum are all present, as well. There are also some specialized topics such as gyroscopic effects and the quaternion formulation of the Newton-Euler equations, among other things.
The first major difference in the inclusion of more advanced methods of solving problems. Not only does he cover Lagrange’s equations of motion, but he also goes into great detail on the Gibbs-Appell equations and Kane’s equations.
Specific examples are given for each method that highlight their strengths and weaknesses, which is a very useful pedagogical tool and allows the student to recognize which method is likely the best for a given problem.
2. Methodology
The methods taught by Roy are really what makes the book so unique. In the 3rd chapter, he introduces the notion of screws -- a mathematical object used to define various properties of rigid bodies and actions upon them. Because it is likely to be completely new to the reader, it is done very carefully and with great attention to detail. From the 4th chapter onward, screws are used as a compact way to formulate all of the standard quantities associated with dynamics.
While it might seem daunting to apply a new mathematical object to dynamics, I found that it was useful in the long run. Problems could be solved much faster and in a more organized fashion.
3. Problems
Each chapter had a substantial number worked example problems. As I mentioned before, examples seemed to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the methods being presented. For instance, an example for the chapter on Lagrange’s equations (chapter 13) asks the student to derive Lagrange’s equations of motion for a system involving a no-slip constraint by applying constraint after deriving Lagrange’s equations (i.e. in the very last step). A subsequent example asks the student to apply the no-slip constraint before deriving Lagrange’s equations and explain why this way is incorrect. There are also numerous exercises at the end of each chapter, of varying difficulty.
Lastly, I’d like to note that there are lots of figures and diagrams, all drawn very clearly.
Overall, this book was not only useful, but it was a delight to learn from. It is clear that a lot of time and effort was put into this textbook and I certainly plan on using it as a reference for the future.

Proper Dynamics Book

The book really shows the elegance of doing rigid body dynamics with screw theory. The notation is very neat and consistent. The example and practice problems cover some interesting situations, such as the gyroscopic effects of a propeller on an airplane during a turn.
