Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, M.Sc., is a Strength & Conditioning coach, creator of the bestselling Turbulence Training plan. Craig also has an advanced research background, completing a Master's of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology from McMaster University. He is a contributing author to Men's Health and Women's Health magazines, and a member of the Training Advisory Board for Maximum Fitness and Oxygen magazines. He is also the creator of the lifestyle blog, Early to Rise.
Chelsea Ratcliff is a graduate student at the University of Utah in Health Communication. Fantastic book on how to train smarter & achieve results

The Great Cardio Myth is a no nonsense guide to smarter and efficient training. Craig Ballantyne sets the record straight and debunks the cardio myths that have been around for so long.
I walked into the weights room at university for the first time 10 years after purchasing the Turbulence Training programme by Craig. As a female in my early 20s I was very intimidated on that first day but it's where I belong now! I can't stand long boring steady state cardio and have followed HIIT style workouts since then also. I was previously doing 1-2 hours of cardio at a time with minimal results! (As a student I had a lot more time on my hands) . It was like I finally awoke in a gym full of mindless exercisers! Goodbye cross trainer, hello shorter workouts with better results.
What I love about this book is that it is Evidenced Based - as a Registered Dietitian my nutrition advice must be the same for my patients. The studies are broken down into easy to understand nuggets of information saving us the work of going through lots of studies. Thanks Craig!
There is an increasing trend of self proclaimed nutrition 'gurus' on social media sites from bloggers to Insta celebs to reality stars with minimal nutrition education dishing out advice. I found it refreshing that the advice on nutrition in this book was simple and straight forward. I was so glad the book did not end with an overly restrictive punishing diet! A very good place for people to start is setting realistic goals with diet and exercise and building on them each week. Craig endorses a sensible approach to eating whole food & on improving the quality of your diet. Dietary and lifestyle changes need to be sustainable long term and the great cardio myth provides a template for both smarter training and healthy eating without being extreme. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in fitness and getting results.

Craig has been a leader in the fitness industry and an innovator in fat loss programming since the debut of Turbulence Training in 2001. Over the course of the next 16 years he has continued to innovate and improve his programs to best suit the needs of the busy lifestyles many lead today. This book is for anyone looking for effective fat loss and strength training programs with the knowledge and research to back it up.

You have to read this book!

I have this nasty habit of starting to read one book, while I've already got another (or few) on the go. At the end of the year there were a bunch of books announced that I really wanted to get, so I pre-ordered them, and they all started arriving within a few days of each other. So I've got 4 books on the go right now, but I put 3 of them down to read this one when it arrived. I haven't finished it yet, as I only have a few minutes each day available to read, right before I go to sleep. I'm past the halfway point now though, and I've learned a lot!
The Great Cardio Myth, by Craig Ballantyne is great for anyone who has been struggling with weight and with spending hours sweating at the gym on the machines with no results and can't figure out why; it's great for personal trainers who are teaching their clients the "old way" of calories in/calories out, and you gotta do hours of cardio each week to stay fit. Or for people like me who like myth busting. :)
I know a lot about food and what it does to our bodies when we eat it. I've been studying and learning about food and nutrition since late 2008. But I didn't know a whole lot about physical fitness until I started following Craig Ballantyne and doing his Turbulence Training exercise program about 2 or 3 years ago.
I've had 3 surgeries that have cut my abdominal muscles and caused some scar tissue under the surface, it makes it look lumpy, and fat gets trapped there between the muscle and scarring. I *never* thought I'd be able to build that muscle back up again, I had tried the "old" way with cardio and sit ups and crunches. But that just doesn't work. When I started Turbulence Training, I built muscle, and was able to see my abs through the scar tissue!
Your body composition is about 80% what you eat. 10% how much and what you do to move it, and 10% genetics. If you're feeding yourself nothing but manufactured convenience foods and McD's, you can't out exercise that. It is just not possible.
You should read this book, buy yourself a copy, or pick one up at the library. If they don't have it, ask them to buy it! You wont regret it!
