Dead Heat is an amazingly well written story about one young man's struggle to stay on the straight and narrow. The obstacles Alex overcame in this novel were riveting. The author brings into question the need for spirituality in times of crisis. The students in my class are turning the pages as I read; loving it. As an Adult education teacher and a special education teacher of 12 years, I would recommend Lisa Nowak's Dead Heat and look forward to reading her Full Throttle series.

The best story I've read in a while

I don't usually write reviews, but when I do, it's because a book has moved me and I believe everyone should read it. Dead Heat did just that.
When Lisa Nowak takes you into Alex's world, you won't want to leave him, and you find yourself loving and rooting for all these characters. Well, all but one.
Keep a box of tissues handy, you'll need it. This is an inspirational story about hope and how a little kindness can go a long way in people's lives.

A modern-day ghost story

Looking for a modern-day ghost story? One with an interesting mortal story? Dead Heat by Lisa Nowak fits the bill.
Alex is a troubled kid with a train-wreck family. But, he's a good kid, talented with machines, and longing for someone in his life. With his mentor and friend Cole, Alex starts to put his life on track. He gets a job, stays in school, and gains confidence. When Cole is killed, Alex's life falls apart. Cole resists the afterlife long enough to put Alex (and his wife Torey) in a good place.
Dead Heat is well-written and Nowak captures the gritty, down-and-out voice of a teenage boy from the wrong side of the tracks. This book contains violence and is recommended for an older YA audience.

My son loved this book!

I bought this book for my son who is struggling with peer pressure and every day teenage struggles. He read the book and thought it was great! It made him think of how life can be if you follow the path that leads to no where. I intend to read the book myself when I get time, but wanted to give a rating from what my son experienced. We are going to donate to an inpatient treatment facility when I finish reading it.
