ELKA BARELY REMEMBERS a time before she knew Trapper. She was just seven years old, wandering lost and hungry in the wilderness, when the solitary hunter took her in. In the years since then, he’s taught her how to survive in this desolate land where civilization has been destroyed and men are at the mercy of the elements and each other.
But the man Elka thought she knew has been harboring a terrible secret. He’s a killer. A monster. And now that Elka knows the truth, she may be his next victim.
Armed with nothing but her knife and the hard lessons Trapper’s drilled into her, Elka flees into the frozen north in search of her real parents. But judging by the trail of blood dogging her footsteps, she hasn’t left Trapper behind—and he won’t be letting his little girl go without a fight. If she’s going to survive, Elka will have to turn and confront not just him, but the truth about the dark road she’s been set on.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of July 2016: Beth Lewis’ debut novel, The Wolf Road, is a brilliant amalgam of literary thriller and gritty western. Long after a cold war mis-step has turned back the clock, gold rush fever and vigilante justice are once again a way of life. After a devastating storm, a scrappy young tomboy is taken in by a strange tattooed backwoodsman who names her Elka. Elka is raised in isolation amid the wilderness until, at age eighteen, she ventures into town for the first time. Once there Elka learns horrifying things about the man she thought of as her daddy and sets off immediately to distance herself from him and try to find her parents. On her journey, Elka’s wits are put to the test time and again, but she is a child of the wilderness and lives by its rules, “You ever see a bear jump off a cliff ‘cause life handed him a few rough draws? No, you don’t. The wild keeps going till it don’t have strength in its muscles and bones. The wild don’t give up; it’s forever and so was I.” Inner fire, honest vulnerability, and an endearing sense of humor, make Elka a remarkable character; and since I finished The Wolf Road I have missed her. And I expect that I will for a good long while…--Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review
From School Library Journal
In a postapocalyptic world where nature has become just as violent as humanity, and humanity even more violent after the "Fall," or as the protagonist's nana called it, the "Big Damn Stupid," dangerous storms called thunderheads are potentially deadly. Lost after barely surviving a thunderhead, Elka is sheltered by a man she eventually calls "Daddy." But he is so much more than a father, and eventually Elka realizes that she has a debt to pay—and he is the payment. This is a riveting tale of evil, horror, survival, retribution, and redemption. Teens will get caught up in the story as Elka crosses the blighted land and her equally blighted mind in search of the truth. However, thanks to Daddy's inadvertent teaching, the protagonist is nothing if not a survivor, and she and her companion wolf strike out to do what needs to be done. Elka has an original voice that reads naturally. This is destined to join favorites like Sasha Dawn's Oblivion and Lisa McMann's Dead to You. VERDICT A wild ride that will draw readers down the road and through a gamut of psychological suspense and danger to the very last word. For young adults who appreciate the distinctive and different.—Gretchen Crowley, formerly at Alexandria City Public Libraries, VA
Review
"A white-knuckle trip through a gritty, frightening, and all-too-plausible post-apocalypse. You won't know whether to root for or be afraid of heroine Elka, and you won't be able to put the book down."—Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts
"A remarkable first novel that drew me in from page one. I was reminded of the beautiful savagery of Cormac McCarthy's The Road and the elegiac overtones of Dickey's Deliverance while reading—but Lewis has crafted something completely unique here, carried so powerfully along by the voice of its indelible young narrator."—Nick Cutter, author of The Troop
"Addictive and compelling..an apocalyptic thriller with a dark, horrible heart. It's impossible not to root for Elka as she fights her way through a chilling -- but disturbingly familiar -- wasteland. "—Kelly Braffet, author of Save Yourself
"Stark and soulful, The Wolf Road is a brutal yet poignant journey into the truth of one girl's origins in a shattered wilderness. It masterfully dances between the savagery of the wild and the raw, blunt humor of frontier logic. A rollicking, striking read."—Robert Jackson Bennett, author of City of Stairs
“Dazzling…a literary thriller that weaves lush language and unforgettable characters into a genuine page-turner.” –Scott Hawkins, author of The Library at Mount Char
“An extraordinary novel—dark and funny and full of wild energy. Elka is a brilliant creation—fierce and vulnerable at the same time. Her story and her voice pull you in from the first page and never let you go. Gripping and unforgettable.”—Antonia Hodgson, author of The Devil in the Marshalsea

Sort of like if Stephen King wrote The Road
By Jessica Weil
"All people are good till they ain't no more."
This genre-bending post-apocalyptic book is part horror story, part cat-and-mouse thriller, part modern western, and part survival tale.
Seventeen-year-old Elka can hardly remember her life before she met Trapper. For a decade now, this gruff man has been like a father to her. The two of them have lived on their own in the middle of nowhere—on the fringes of a decimated society. Trapper has taught her how to live like an animal, hunting for food and surviving in the stark wilderness.
Then one day, Elka sees Trapper's face on a wanted posted in a nearby town and learns that he's a deranged killer. She flees north in search of her real parents, but it won't be an easy journey. Along the way, Elka encounters dangerous people struggling to get by in this new world—and not only that, but she has the sneaking suspicion that she's being stalked by Trapper. Worst of all is the nagging feeling, as she confronts her own dark past, that maybe she's just as inhuman as he is. Maybe he taught her too well.
The Wolf Road is a haunting story about a feral young girl reckoning with her inner darkness and coming to terms with her own humanity. It's sort of like if Stephen King wrote The Road. While I questioned some of the author's narrative choices, I was thoroughly captivated by Elka and enjoyed taking this journey with her.

The Thrilling Moments of the Novel Are Not Worth the Grisly Ending
By Kem White
The book has several promising moments, but at the end, "The Wolf Road" is too grisly and despairing for this novel to succeed. Elka is a feral girl-woman raised for most of her life by a man she calls Trapper. They live in the cold reaches of what must be Canada a few years after some global war. A chance encounter with the law sets Elka free of Trapper driving her into the wilderness where she encounters other humans and human relationships for the first time in her life. She desperately flees the gruesome past life she and Trapper had and hopes for redemption for past acts. This book has lots of excitement, blood, and thrilling moments, and because of those, I found the book held my interest. But the novel, which could have succeeded without resorting to its ghastly outcome, left me wanting a less distasteful resolution. While I grew accustomed to it, I tired of Elka's method of speech, a silly patois I can only suppose the author used to emphasize her feral nature. I also tired of Elka's repetitious "philosophizing" about the moral rectitude of the wild. Finally, what is tantamount to the final outcome is given right at the very start of the book; the reader knows what happens throughout the entire novel greatly diminishing the excitement of the ending. This book will likely hold your attention should you read it. I just cannot recommend it.

Mediocre
By Steven M. Anthony
This is a post-apocalyptic novel set in near future British Columbia. Apparently, a series of major power conflicts has led to a nuclear exchange, ravaging the landscape and returning society to a 19th century frontier existence.
The protagonist of the story is a young woman, given the name Elka, who is raised from age seven by a sociopathic hermit of sorts. Trapper raises Elka and instructs her in all the skills needed to survive in the wilderness, but Trapper is not what he appears.
Elka’s goal in life is to travel north to the Yukon gold fields and reunite with her parents, who abandoned her years ago to the care of her grandmother (who was ultimately killed). The story revolves around her journey north, and the various adventures attendant with the journey.
As post-apocalyptic tales go, I’ve got to say that I’ve read much better (The Road, The Stand, A Canticle for Liebowitz). I can’t say that I felt much empathy for the main character, and found her dialogue to be annoying and overly “hillbillyized”. Most of the characters are relatively one dimensional stereotypes and most of the action is pretty predictable. Not terrible, just not very good.
