James "Head" Guiliani was an unlikely candidate to become a passionate animal rescuer. But after years of worsening alcohol and drug use and a stretch in the Riverhead Correctional Facility, James finally hit bottom.
It was then that he met Lena Perrelli, who helped turn his life around, providing the love and support he'd rejected in the past. And when the couple rescued an abandoned and abused shih tzu, the second phase of James's salvation began. Lovingly named Bruno, the small dog opened the former enforcer's hardened heart, and James discovered a new purpose in life as a devoted animal rescuer.
Dogfella tells how this onetime altar boy from Queens became a gang member, a mob confidante, an an addict and convicted felon—and how he found redemption by dedicating his life to animals. Alongside his personal journey, James shares stories from his rescue missions with Keno's Animal Rescue Shelter in Brooklyn: saving pit bulls from a dogfighting ring, driving through six-foot snowdrifts to reach 200 cats stranded in a blizzard, taking in homeless ducks from Staten Island, and many more. Sometimes scary, sometimes funny, and often poignant, James's story shows how the love of an animal can bring even the most hopeless cases a new purpose and a path to redemption.

About the Author
James "Head" Guiliani is the fifth of six kids born to a religious, working-class Italian-American family. He and his four brothers attended Holy Child Jesus School, where they all served as altar boys. After graduating, James attended Richmond Hill High School, where he began a life of petty crime by joining a local street gang during his early teens. By his mid-twenties, James was an enforcer for the Gambino crime family. James carried a union book for twenty-three years, working as a laborer in the construction industry. He's been a body-builder, bouncer, and mob confidante. James now runs The Diamond Collar, a top dog grooming parlor in Brooklyn, pampering pooches with the love of his life, Lena Perrelli. Charlie Stella is a critically acclaimed author of numerous crime novels, short stories, a screenplay, and three off-off Broadway plays. His third novel, Charlie Opera, was picked as a Publishers Weekly Mystery Book of the Year in 2003. He received an MFA in fiction from Southern New Hampshire University.

DOGFELLA - A MUST READ FOR ALL ANIMAL LOVERS!!

This book is truly inspiring and heartfelt. It gives such an honest account of James Guiliani's life and how his life was changed by a little Shih Tzu named Bruno. This book will have you laughing and crying and leave you thankful for people like James who dedicate their lives by saving animals. A MUST READ!!!

surprisingly well written and hard to put down, interesting stuff.

I was recommended this book by a friend and although its not the sort of thing I normally read (I have very little interest in criminal types OR dogs) I was told it would cheer me up and was a good read. Well I certainly needed both! After having rather a horrid time of late (won't go into detail) but my mood was instantly lifted reading this book which I found to be very well written, certainly from the heart and was the kick in the pants I needed to start thinking more positive. Its very life affirming and the writer not only comes across as being very human, down to earth and easy to relate but is also able to show no matter what life throws at you, its in your grasp to change things for the better. I highly recommend this book, certainly a little gem of a read!

A Dog To The Rescue

An amazing story about a man who was at the end of his rope, almost literally. A life gone wrong, terribly wrong, until it looked like there was no hope. Until Bruno. Hard to believe that an abandoned dog can change a man's life so drastically, but that's exactly what happens. I love any story about a rescued animal, especially a dog. But what adds to this story is the background of the rescuer. I highly recommend this book, you won't be sorry.
