Doesn't help you learn anything

I completed the Java in 24 Hour book, which was quite helpful. So I picked up this book to get me started with Android development thinking it would be of similar quality. Forget it. I have been working with this book for about 6 weeks and have not yet complete Hour 4. This is not the book for anyone trying to learn Android. For example, in Hour 2 there is no mention of why the code you copied from the book is getting errors (you need to do imports). That's okay in Hour 8 maybe, but not Hour 2. Also the example code which you may or may not be able to find on the Sams website does not include all the code needed to complete the activities at the end of the chapter.

I have been a programmer for more than 20 years, so it's not that I'm unfamiliar with programming concepts.

I really want to throw this book out the window, but hope Amazon will take it back instead!

Errors or omissions in code examples

Many of the examples in the book are either incomplete, or contain errors! Unless you already know Eclipse and Java (in that case, why are you buying this book?), you are going to be very confused. On the up side, this book will not let you just copy the code examples and not learn the language. You are going to do enough research to find the correct coding that you WILL learn Android Application development. (e.g. Better plan on about 10 hours for lesson 2.) I bought the Sams "IOS6 Application Development" and it was OUTSTANDING! I used it and was able to develop an iPhone app. I found none of the issues with it, that are in this book.

I enjoy using this book.

I seem to keep coming back to the Sams "24" hr books when I need to learn programming. For me, the "24 hours" is more like "24 days", but their structure breaks down tasks and teaches in a very modular way that I relate to. I use these books both as a tutorial and as a reference.

Leave this one alone

It's never a good sign when an author starts out saying that she has taken "liberties" with the facts, so lovers of history will probably find reading this book to be a struggle. There is just too much that is wrong to enjoy it much. Since neither one of them is a prostitute, the characters know too much about sex and indulge in it too freely to be living in the 18th century. The dialogue isn't true to the period either. There was obviously very little research into the period to make the story believable. Throwing in the names of real pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read does not make up for the other inconsistencies. The number of editing errors would almost seem to indicate that the rough draft was printed instead of the finished version.

Things happen too quickly in the story also. There is very little development as it jumps from scene to scene and the relationship between Colleen and Abby shows practically no thought. Lesbian readers will probably be unhappy with the fact that Colleen lives her life as a man throughout the book, although that is the one realistic touch. It's the only way the women would have had a chance of staying together.

There are a number of very good and accurate historical romances in lesbian literature. The reader should look for those and leave this one alone.

OH WOW!

This IS A GREAT STORY --- I can't wait to see how it ends, as I will find out tonight, when I have time to finish it.

Vada Foster writes very well & the story grows along easily. I AM certainly enjoying her efforts. I would say more, but I don't want to give away the plot. THIS BOOK is definitely a 'KEEP' one in my collection.

I have enjoyed many stories by Vada Foster, even some she hasn't published - thanks to fan fiction sites on the Internet. I was certainly expecting to enjoy this one too, and wasn't disappointed. Vada, not to be confused with her sister Verda, has a knack for delivering fun characters in creative settings. Her earlier book with BL Miller, `Josie and Rebecca: the Western Chronicles,' is a lesbian literature classic (in my humble opinion).

Here she introduces the tragic Colleen Edwards. Colleen was a very young woman when her mother and brothers died from an unknown sickness. After trying to keep her on land, Colleen's father ultimately gives in and lets her go to sea with him and live on their ship the Betsy Ann. Colleen learns the life of a sailor and never shows any inclination toward getting married.

Also introduced is Abby Hume. Abby was the unfortunate (or fortunate, as the case may be) bride whose husband was killed on their wedding day - even before they left the church. Never in love with the man, Abby took full advantage of the situation anyway and mourned his death for several years. During mourning, her father agreed to let her pick her next husband, but no one suitable ever came along. That is, until Colleen set foot on her veranda. It was love at first sight, although neither of them understood it at the time.

The two women come to understand their feelings over time, but are almost robbed of the chance to act on them when Abby is kidnapped by pirates. With her knowledge of the sea, Colleen is determined to save the woman she loves.

Bottom Line - Great characters in tragic circumstances make for a wonderful book by this talented author. My only wish is that Foster would publish more so we could all enjoy her gift for writing.

This is a great primer for any shell loving child

This is a great primer for any shell loving child. This book talks about the different types of shells, the animals that live inside of shells, fossils, food that comes from shells, freshwater shells, pearls, and more. The hardcover is not library bound, and it does have a slit cut out in it that displays a clip art cd. Clearly, this is an older book. The photographs, although not very saturated, are beautiful in some parts of the book and dull in others. The book reads like any other DK Eyewitness book with facts sprinkled throughout the photos. The book comes with an informational wall chart that I picture being hung in a classroom of some sort. Overall, I am happy with this book and would recommended it to anyone with young children.

About the Author
Arthur Benjamin is a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California and is past editor of Math Horizons magazine. He has received numerous awards for his teaching and writing, and has written several books, including Secrets of Mental Math where he reveals his secrets for doing lightning fast mental arithmetics. He has also created four video courses for The Great Courses. Dr. Benjamin has appeared on many television and radio programs, including The Today Show, CNN, The Colbert Report, and National Public Radio. He has been profiled in The New York Times, USA Today, Scientific American, Discover, Omni, Espquire, Wired, and People Magazine. Reader's Digest calls him "America's Best Math Whiz." Natalya St. Clair double majored in studio art and mathematics at Scripps College. She combined her passions for both subjects to illustrate The Art of Mental Calculation, which is her first published book. She has taught middle school math for seven years and has been an award-winning MATHCOUNTS coach in Illinois. She has served as a contributing member of numerous outreach programs, including the Machine Project, Illinois Geometry Laboratory, MATHCOUNTS, and the Independent Schools Association of the Central States.

Great Strategies and Illustrations

My daughter greatly enjoyed learning the strategies within this workbook. It explains how to easily break down problems and provided plenty of opportunities to practice each lesson as she began to master the strategies. The illustrations were very captivating and helped keep her attention to make the learning fun. This is a must buy for parents who would like to help their children process math problems more quickly.

Clearly, this is a great book for either the expert or the novice (previously stuck in the world of SAYC) trying to move into the world of better bidding.

A sophisticated book for relatively advanced players

Being unsatisfied with my level of understanding of the two over one bidding system (after a friend taught the basics to me), I read this book, which everyone told me was the authority on the subject. I found in this book a fairly complete description of a system a level or two more sophisticated than what I had previously played. Max Hardy tries to convey a great deal of information to the reader, so the text is somewhat dense and must be read slowly and carefully. Furtheremore, despite its length, the book doesn't always cover certain situations in as much depth as I would like. On a possibly related note, Max Hardy assumes that the reader has a good knowledge of standard bidding. Hence, my earlier disappointment at the lack of depth in some cases may reflect more my own lack of knowledge than any deficiency on Max Hardy's part (this is the first book I have read describing an entire bidding system).
In short, if you're interested in learning two over one, you really should read this book. Eventually. If you're a fairly inexperienced player, first finish learning standard bidding and then be prepared for a slow but informative read.

Two Over One Game Force by Max Hardy is for all competitive duplicate bridge players who want to learn this system or effectively defend against it. Since two over one is probably the most used bidding system in North America today, an understanding of the principles is essential. Though this book is ten years old, it is still the best text for learning and for reference for any partnership wishing to develop and advance their two over one knowledge. I found it to well written and concise. As with any system, it will require many hours to absorb and many hours of practice to attain proficiency, but it is a more natural system than Precision or other big club bids. It allows a game forcing bid at a low level, thus giving a partnership room to explore for the right game or slam. Expect to spend a lot of time with this volume, and to constantly return to it, but it will greatly improve your ability to find your best contract. Isn't that what it's all about?
