Notes from a Small Island, by Bill Bryson

Before New York Times bestselling author Bill Bryson wrote The Road to Little Dribbling, he took this delightfully irreverent jaunt around the unparalleled floating nation of Great Britain, which has produced zebra crossings, Shakespeare, Twiggie Winkie’s Farm, and places with names like Farleigh Wallop and Titsey.

Amazon.com Review
Reacting to an itch common to Midwesterners since there's been a Midwest from which to escape, writer Bill Bryson moved from Iowa to Britain in 1973. Working for such places as Times of London, among others, he has lived quite happily there ever since. Now Bryson has decided his native country needs him--but first, he's going on a roundabout jaunt on the island he loves.

Britain fascinates Americans: it's familiar, yet alien; the same in some ways, yet so different. Bryson does an excellent job of showing his adopted home to a Yank audience, but you never get the feeling that Bryson is too much of an outsider to know the true nature of the country. Notes from a Small Island strikes a nice balance: the writing is American-silly with a British range of vocabulary. Bryson's marvelous ear is also in evidence: "... I noted the names of the little villages we passed through--Pinhead, West Stuttering, Bakelite, Ham Hocks, Sheepshanks ..." If you're an Anglophile, you'll devour Notes from a Small Island.

From Publishers Weekly
Before his return to the U.S. after a 20-year residence in England, journalist Bryson (Made in America) embarked on a farewell tour of his adopted homeland. His trenchant, witty and detailed observations of life in a variety of towns and villages will delight Anglophiles. Traveling only on public transportation and hiking whenever possible, Bryson wandered along the coast through Bournemouth and neighboring villages that reinforced his image of Britons as a people who rarely complain and are delighted by such small pleasures as a good tea. In Liverpool, the author's favorite English city, he visited the Merseyside Maritime Museum to experience its past as a great port. Interweaving descriptions of landscapes and everyday encounters with shopkeepers, pub customers and fellow travelers, Bryson shares what he loves best about the idiosyncrasies of everyday English life in this immensely entertaining travel memoir. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Bryson, who hails from Iowa, has spent the last 20 years living in England and writing about the often nettlesome relationship between his two countries, especially regarding their shared language (Made in America, LJ 2/1/95). His latest work is "a kind of valedictory tour around the green and kindly island" before he moved with his family back to the United States. With Paul Theroux's Kingdom by the Sea in hand, Bryson braves the inhospitably soggy fall weather to trudge from Dover, London, coastal villages, Wales, Scotland, and back home to Yorkshire on a helter-skelter seven-week journey that only a reader well versed in the geography of the region will follow, since there are no maps to aid the (American) reader. In fact, Bryson is writing here more for his British fans, who no doubt roar with mirth as he gently pokes fun at their excessive forbearance and fondness for Cagney and Lacey repeats. He is hilarious when transcribing a conversation with unsuspecting locals, especially in Glaswegian pubs, but merely dumb when he indulges in a curious (is it British?) bathroom humor. His portrait is certainly heartfelt, and one wonders, as he chokes up describing a stately, vanishing old England, if he will truly find happiness watching the 67 television channels in his native land. For all travel collections.

I'm Swearing Off Bill Bryson Books, I Promise
By Lauren E. Pomerantz
I have to stop reading these books. People are looking at me funny in restaurants and on the train when I burst out laughing. But Bryson's books are SO GOOD. What's a person to do?
If you read A Walk in the Woods and felt a deep yearning to walk the Appalachian trail, haul out your suitcase. This book will make you want to follow Bryson's footsteps again as he travels across England, Wales, and Scotland by foot, by bus, and by train. He spends a day or so in dozens of small towns and cities, disecting them for our education and amusement. He tours galleries, musuems, and historic homes; visits pubs and restaurants; and stays in an amazing variety of shoddy hotels. (There are fine hotels in England. They just cost more than he is willing to pay.)
Even if you don't plan to go to England anytime soon (and why not? it's a lovely country full of friendly people we Americans and Canadians can mostly understand) this book is a reminder to those of us who are far too insular that the world out there is different and that difference is a good and quite frequently amusing thing.

An American Views Life in Britain
By Bucherwurm
Bill Bryson expertly captures the mental amusement and bemusement of an American living in Britain. I am an American who also lived in England, and I laughed myself silly reading this book. This isn't meant to be a travel guide or an in depth academic study of British culture as some reviewers must evidently believe. There are many ways to reminisce about life in a foreign country, and BB chose to tell us fond, funny stories of his life in the UK. Let's not be stuffily chauvinistic about these things. I'm sure many Brits could write equally hilarious tales of their lives over here in the USA. For me its hard to understand that any American who has lived in Britain would not find funny such tales as the train/bus schedule incident (As I remember it the Brit Rail agent couldn't understand Bryson's difficulty with a schedule that had a daily train arrive in a town minutes after the scheduled departure of the daily bus that took travellers to their next destination.)
If y! ou are a Bryson fan, this is as good as he gets. You will especially enjoy it if you have spent time in both the US and the UK.

He's better with places than with people
By Frank Cunat
This is a great read, a fascinating book about the writer's journey through Great Britain, with the author's impressions cleverly expressed. He's like an earthier Paul Theroux, or like Peter Mayle as channeled by Dave Barry. Bryson is good at using both humor and hyperbole to illustrate good points about his British travels as well as disappointments. After reading the book, you feel you've had a conversation with an old friend who gave you the lowdown on his trip without any sugar-coating. You feel that everything Bryson says comes directly from the heart.
The only reason I didn't rate the book 5 stars is that, a few times too often, Bryson goes into great detail about how rude he was toward service people who were just doing their jobs and whose performance wasn't precisely what he wanted. He reaches a low point when he takes almost a page to describe his reaction to a McDonald's employee who made the mistake of asking if he wanted "an apple turnover with that." Maybe it's because I've waited tables, but Bryson struck me as exactly the kind of arrogant, self-righteous, condescending customer you prayed you wouldn't have to serve. He comes close in these passages to personifying the ugly American: willing to enjoy England's riches, but not tolerant of its shortcomings.
Nevertheless, that's no reason not to read the book. Bryson's insights into the places he visits are more than worth the price of admission.

Review

From the reviews:

“This book is devoted to anisotropic elasticity, mechanics of composite materials and fracture mechanics, and connects theoretical treatment and numerical analysis. … the book by Hwu is appropriate to be a university textbook for the course of anisotropic elasticity. … a good reference book for the courses of plates and shells, elasticity, fracture mechanics, mechanics of composite materials. This well-written book is also a reader-friendly and good-organised handbook for engineers, textbook for students, and simultaneously is a research monograph in the field of anisotropic elasticity.” (Igor Andrianov, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1196, 2010)

“Structures, particularly those composed of composite materials, are often modeled as being composed of anisotropic elastic plates; this book is written for beginning graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as for researchers interested in understanding such plates.” (IEEE Control Systems Magazine, Vol. 30, December, 2010)

From the Back Cover

Anisotropic Elastic Plates find wide applications as structural elements in modern technology. The plates are considered to be subjected to not only inplane loads but also transverse loads. Plane problems, plate bending problems as well as stretching-bending coupling problems are all treated in this book. In addition to the introduction of the theory of anisotropic elasticity that includes two complex variable methods - Lekhnitiskii formalism and Stroh formalism- several important subjects are also discussed such as wedges, interfaces, cracks, holes, inclusions, contact problems, piezoelectric materials, thermal stresses and boundary element analysis.

Anisotropic Elastic Plates also collects over one hundred problems and solutions. This book is a useful resource for engineers and researchers in composite materials.

A lucid treatment of anisotropic elastic theory, especially the elastic interaction of a dislocation with an interface
By Ulfilas
I turned to this book for information on a very specific problem among the many facets of anisotropic elasticity theory addressed by the author: the interaction of a dislocation with a free surface, or with a planar boundary for a layer of different mechanical stiffness. I had read about the treatment of this problem using Stroh's 2-dimensional dislocation model and analytical continuation in the complex plane in numerous journal articles. Prior to reading Hwu's rigorous treatment of this problem, however, I did not understand how the authors of these articles used analytic continuation to extract the boundary conditions from the continuity of displacement and stress at the interface.

Instead of presenting the boundary conditions as "obvious" or as the result of "standard analytic continuation arguments" (as indifferently observed by the authors of various journal articles), Hwu clearly explains how Liouville's Theorem (a concept found in all complex analysis books) is used to arrive at the result. Liouville's Theorem states that a function which is analytic in a given region of the complex plane must also be constant in that region. Therefore, if a function in a given region is analytic, that region would necessarily be free of singularities/dislocations. By invoking Liouville's Theorem (p.102, Ch.4), Hwu makes it clear that each side of the interface (i.e. each half-space) may only be represented by a sum of functions that are devoid of singularities. Thus, if the dislocation is contained in the lower half-space (i.e. half space#1, which is situated below the interface), half-space#1 cannot include the Green's function G(z) corresponding to the dislocation/singularity. The sum of functions representing the upper half-space (i.e. half-space#2, the which is above the interface), however, may include the Green's function for the dislocation/singularity because the Green's function is finite within half-space#2. Similarly, the sum of functions representing half-space#2 may not include the Green's function corresponding to the reflection of the singularity/dislocation (i.e (G(z*))*, according the Schwarz reflection principle for harmonic functions). On the other hand, the sum of functions representing half-space#1 may include (G(z*))*, because (G(z*))* is finite within half-space#2. For a good treatment of the Schwarz reflection principle see Dennery (pp.80-82) Mathematics for Physicists (Dover Books on Physics).

Almost everything you need to know about calculating the strain field or Peach-Koehler force on a dislocation near an interface or surface is contained in Chapter 4 "Infinite Space, Half-Space, and Bimaterials" on pp.87-114. What I have learned from reading this chapter in Hwu's book is vitally important in my research work. Only the level of understanding achieved by reading a book of this caliber is sufficient for the dedicated research scientist or engineer to have confidence in his calculations.

The brilliant treatment that I have described above, however, only takes the reader up to the first four chapters (pp.1-113) of this outstanding book! In addition to the laying the groundwork for the treatment of half-spaces, the author addresses wedges and interface corners (Ch.5: pp.115-158); elliptical and polygonal holes/voids (Ch.6: pp.159-186); interfacial cracks and delimitation (Ch.6: pp.187-23; inclusions and their interactions with dislocations (Ch.8: pp.239-275); surface indentation and the elastic theory of contact between two adjacent bodies (Ch.9: pp.277-332); thermoelastic effects on voids, cracks, and wedges (Ch.10, pp.333-367); piezoelectric materials (pp.369-410); and plate bending (Ch.12: 411-434). Chapters 13-14 (pp.435-543 address stretching, voids, and inclusions in laminates: Chapter 15 (pp.545-588) is devoted to boundary element analysis. The remaining pages of this book (pp.589-673) are devoted to its extensive appendices, tables, references, and indices.

For those who find this book as fully informative and enjoyable as I have, I recommend the book authored by Professor Hwu's Ph.D. advisor, Professor Thomas Chi-Tsai (T. C. T.) Ting: Anisotropic Elasticity: Theory and Applications (Oxford Engineering Science Series).

A Tale of Two Cities (Penguin Classics), by Charles Dickens

'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...'

Charles Dickens'sA Tale of Two Citiesportrays a world on fire, split between Paris and London during the brutal and bloody events of the French Revolution. After eighteen years as a political prisoner in the Bastille the aging Dr Manette is finally released and reunited with his daughter in England. There, two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil lanes of London, they are all drawn against their will to the vengeful, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror and soon fall under the lethal shadow of La Guillotine. This edition uses the text as it appeared in its first serial publication in 1859 to convey the full scope of Dickens's vision, and includes the original illustrations by H.K. Browne ('Phiz'). Richard Maxwell's introduction discusses the intricate interweaving of epic drama with personal tragedy.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators.

Grade 9 Up—Charles Dickens's classic tale of one family's suffering during the French Revolution is brought to life in this audio adaptation. The voice of Audie Award-winning narrator Simon Vance sets the tone for the characters and creates the Dickensesqe mood of the times when the rich and the poor were far apart and no one was exempt from the ensuing wrath during the Revolution. Vance's stone varies from soothing to animated while creating different voices for the characters and using appropriate accents. A bonus feature on the last CD is an e-book in pdf format that can be printed or used as a read-along while listening to the audio. This easily navigated feature would be particularly helpful for struggling readers.—Jeana Actkinson, Bridgeport High School, TX

Review
“[A Tale of Two Cities] has the best of Dickens and the worst of Dickens: a dark, driven opening, and a celestial but melodramatic ending; a terrifyingly demonic villainess and (even by Dickens’ standards) an impossibly angelic heroine. Though its version of the French Revolution is brutally simplified, its engagement with the immense moral themes of rebirth and terror, justice, and sacrifice gets right to the heart of the matter . . . For every reader in the past hundred and forty years and for hundreds to come, it is an unforgettable ride.”–from the Introduction by Simon Schama

An Eighth Grader reviews A Tale of Two Cities
By A Customer
This book is incredible. I read it last year (in eighth grade), and I love it. I love Charles Dickens' language and style. Whoever is reading this may have little or no respect for my opinions, thinking that I am to young to comprehend the greatness of the plot and language, and I admit that I probably do not completely appreciate this classic piece of literature. I do read above a 12th grade level, although that doesn't count for a whole lot. It took me a while to get into this book. In fact, I dreaded reading it for a long time. But nearer to the end, I was drawn in by the poignant figure of a jackal, Sydney Carton. In his story I became enthralled with this book, especially his pitiful life. After I read and cried at Carton's transformation from an ignoble jackal to the noblest of persons, I was able to look back over the parts of the book that I had not appreciated, and realize how truly awesome they are. I learned to appreciate all of the characters, from Lucy Manette to Madame Defarge. I also was affected by all of the symbolism involved with both the French Revolution, and the nature of sinful man, no matter what the time or place. My pitiful review could never do justice to this great book, please don't be discouraged by my inability.

A Tale of Two Cities
By mp
The more Dickens I read, the more impressed I become at his skill as a writer. No matter the form, be it short, long, or a monolith like some of his best works, Dickens excels at changing his style of characterization and plot to fit whatever mode he writes in. "A Tale of Two Cities" is one of his shorter novels, and he manages to make the most of out of the allotted space. The compression of the narrative sacrifices Dickens's accustomed character development for plot and overall effect, but what we get is still phenomenal.
"A Tale of Two Cities" begins in 1775, with Mr. Lorry, a respectable London banker, meeting Lucie Manette in Paris, where they recover Lucie's father, a doctor, and mentally enfeebled by an unjust and prolonged imprisonment in the Bastille. This assemblage, on their journey back to England, meets Charles Darnay, an immigrant to England from France who makes frequent trips between London and Paris. Upon their return to England, Darnay finds himself on trial for spying for France and in league with American revolutionaries. His attorney, Stryver, and Stryver's obviously intelligent, if morally corrupt and debauched, assistant, Sydney Carton, manage to get Darnay exonerated of the charges against him. Darnay, a self-exiled former French aristocrat, finds himself compelled to return to France in the wake of the French Revolution, drawing all those around him into a dangerous scene.
Dickens portrays the French Revolution simplistically, but powerfully, as a case of downtrodden peasants exacting a harsh revenge against an uncaring aristocratic, even feudal, system. The Defarge's, a wine merchant and his wife, represent the interests of the lower classes, clouded by hatred after generations of misuse. Darnay, affiliated by birth with the French aristocracy, is torn between sympathy for his native country in its suffering, and his desire to be free of his past.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel driven by historical circumstance and plot, much like the works of Sir Walter Scott, wherein the characters themselves assert less agency, finding themselves forced to deal with the tide of epic events. Richard Maxwell's introduction to this newest Penguin edition does a good job outlining the themes of doubling and literary influence that Dickens works with. One specific influence I discerned in reading "A Tale" that Maxwell doesn't metion is Edmund Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France," which if nothing else, gives the feeling that the rampant violence of the early revolution and the later Reign of Terror has brought about an irreversible change in human nature. While Dickens remains cautiously optimistic throughout the novel that France can recover, the tone of the novel speaks to the regression of humanity into a more feral, primal state, rather than advertise any real hope for its enlightened progress.
Despite the supposed dichotomy between England and France in the novel, Dickens seems to suggest throughout that there are no real differences, due to the way that human nature is consistently portrayed. With England in between two revolutions, American and French, Lucie's sensitivity early in the novel to hearing the "echoing" footsteps of unseen multitudes indicates a palpable fear that the "idyllic" or "pastoral" England he tries to portray is not exempt from the social discontent of America or France. In this light, stolid English characters like Miss Pross, Jerry Cruncher, and Jarvis Lorry appear to almost overcompensate in their loyalty to British royalty. In a novel that deals with death, religion, mental illness, I could go on and on for a week, but I won't. One of those novels whose famous first and last lines are fixed in the minds of people who've never even read it, "A Tale of Two Cities" demands to be read and admired.

It is the best of books, it is the worst of books....
By Newton Ooi
I was first introduced to this book when I was 14 years old in my 8th grade English class. I found it utterly overwhelming; in its cast, its plotlines, its settings, its themes and most of all, in the intricate web the various relationships create. I only understood three things about this book. First, the two cities are London and Paris. Second, France was convulsing itself with the French Revolution while England was undergoing changes that would prepare it to enter the Industrial Revolution. Third, English in Dickens' time did not resemble English at the end of the 20th century, but somehow seemed similar to the English used in Hollywood epic movies from the 1950s and 1960s like Spartacus, Ben-hur, the Ten Commandments, Cleopatra, etc...

Years later, I picked up this book and reread it. I considered this a labor, not of love, but of duty. This book is so famous and used so often in English literature classes that I felt I had to read it again for a deeper understanding. What I got from this book a 2nd time around is a profoundly subtle yet accurate sociological and psychological study of what happens to a society and a community that is built on shaky foundations. Specifically, France was an aristocracy where a tiny minority owned all the land. The rest of society was organized into tiers that varied in their opportunities of becoming landowners. Because of this pyramid structure, most of the people hewed to the social order knowing that yes they get crapped on by those above them, but there's always somebody below them to take advantage of.

Eventually this social Ponzi scheme comes to a screeching halt with the French Revolution. Enough people have had enough that they decide to start over. In the process a lot of people get killed and a lot of property changes hands. So woven into this story of a society's collapse are individual tales of woe, revenge, sacrifice, retribution, love and lust. Some are wrongly imprisoned or executed, while others willingly trade places to free those who have been marked for punishment. Families are torn asunder, and friendships are made and betrayed.

Overall, this book is a classic; though not appropriate for anyone not in their mid-teens yet. Its careful depiction of a society warrants its reading for those interested in 18th century Western history. But it should be read with notes and study guides for its depth and complexity can easily lose the interest and focus of many readers.

Gorgeous Animal Designs at Night with Black backgrounds
By iiiireader
[[VIDEOID:fdf7e479f0f9069ca012064b6396191f]]This is my second book by Lindsey Boylan where the backgrounds are pre-filled in with flat mat black and the design stretches over the entire page from side to side. I really love the way that my coloring “pops” off the page with this style. I have found that my pastel and neon colors really show up in a whole new way.

There are 31 designs in the coloring book and they are all quite imaginative. The artist has filled in the animals with lovely flowers and motifs to making coloring them even more fun. I am a huge fan of animal scenes and having them with the black background makes this a new and unique book in my coloring collection. There are many animals in the book, including a gorgeous howling wolf, a rabbit, some mice, and even an owl. The animals are set in an imaginative forest with lots of great plants and flowers to color.

Creative Haven books are always a good quality paper and my pencils and gel pens generally work well with them. My markers almost always bleed through. Not too worry, though, as they only print designs on one side of the page. The backside is left blank. If you don't remove the page from the book to color, you should put a piece of freezer paper, cardstock, chipboard, or even a couple of sheets of good weight paper behind the page as you work so it won't bleed through to the following page. If you do remove the pages, the publishers have provided nicely perforated pages for easy removal.

Transported to the Forest from My Kitchen Table
By Amazon Customer
I am a new, soon-to-be 70 coloring addict. Most of the animals in Midnight Forest have a special look to their faces--sweet, stealthy, watchful, cuddly, and their surroundings are interesting. This is a great book for those of us entering "A Room of One's Own" for the first time, trying out different pencils, gel pens, markers, etc. The small spaces are not too small and the larger areas are not too big. Thus, you can learn what you want from other coloring books (I already have eight--many from Creative Haven--because I like diversity.) One day I'm in a dark, beautiful jungle and the next diving in the ocean. If you have not tried these black background books, you are missing a fun experience. Don't forget to give it sparkle over the colored pencil work. After all, there's a full moon to catch the colors.
