About the Author

Krzysztof (Kris) Iniewski, Ph.D., manages R&D developments at Redlen Technologies, a manufacturer of high resolution Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) semiconductors in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and is also executive director of CMOS Emerging Technologies Inc. (www.cmoset.com). His research interests are in hardware design for medical and networking applications. From 2004 to 2006, Dr. Iniewski was an associate professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Alberta, where he conducted research on low-power wireless circuits and systems. Previously, he held various technical and management positions in industry, developing a number of VLSI chips used in optical networks, and he was also an assistant professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Iniewski has published more than 100 research papers and holds 18 international patents granted in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Japan.

I did not find anything new - but it is a concise summary of 2012 state of the art smart grid with a few forward looking items, but most of my(Eskom!) project portfolio has these issues on current projects...

Gordon Matthew's Australian son is a true story about one individuals struggle to gain an identity. This Autobiographical account is about a young Australian man, who has been adopted out after he was born. Since he has been a small child, he has always stood out from other children because of his colour. Gordon's story is an indrediable story of self discovery, - a deeply moving and corageous story which strikes at the heart string of anyone who is lucky enough to read this compelling story. A definate read. A very interesting story, promises not to disappoint. 4 Stars

Ending too soon

The book is painstakingly dragging until the 100th page. Seems Matthews has not gotten over the horrors of his crises so he excruciatingly drags us to details which he himself grapples with. Thereafter, he suspends us and provides hints of what will happen which will make the book difficult to put down until the last page. When you reach the end, you achingly need to know more.

This is a story of pain and how some kinds of pain are difficult to let go. We just need to live life with it and against it. I hope Matthews finds his peace sometime somewhere...then writes about it so we also get to have some peace of mind.

While I might make my Australian Studies students read this, I'm afraid it might disturb them too much. But isn't life such? I wish I could contact Matthews to tell him that his efforts are appreciated.

Kudos to him for revealing all this and for more that has to follow!

The authors

Jacqueline Bloomfield(PhD, MN, BN, PGDip, RN, RM) is a lecturer at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London. Her work involves clinical skills teaching and she has extensive experience as an OSCE examiner.

Anne Pegram(MPhil, BSc (Hons), PGCE(A), RN) is a lecturer at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London. She is the OSCE coordinator within the school and is involved in the planning and implementation of OSCEs in pre- and post-qualification programmes. She is also a founding member of the OSCE UK network.

Carys Jones(PhD, MA, PGCE, BA) until recently was a lecturer in academic communication at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery. She is now a consultant working in a new project involving two additional Schools within King’s College London. Her area of expertise is in how verbal and written communication helps learning.

A Must-Have For Charles Band Fans, But Definitely Flawed

I love Charles Band. He's one of my biggest inspirations. I recognize the flaws in his work, but also love the many, many awesome things he has brought into this world. So I take stuff like this very seriously.

This book is amazingly well-researched. It covers Charles Band's career from the beginning to the collapse of his Empire Studios. A couple of pages are devoted to every film, and the authors get into some impressive details, going so far as to compare original scripts to the finished products in some sections. There are extremely thoughtful interviews with Charles Band and many of the directors, actors and other creative minds who brought these films to life. All of this makes the book a must-have for Charles Band fans. It's also highly recommended for genre and independent film enthusiasts of all sorts, as it by necessity tracks the rise of drive-in movies, the birth of video and more.

Here's the problem: It doesn't seem as if the authors actually like most of these movies or B-movies in general. Few names pass by that don't get some sort of snide remark. They even talk smack about Elvira. Who doesn't like Elvira? More often than not, the reviews tend to be lists of each film's flaws. Yes, these films have many flaws, but I'm not sure why any fan (which I assume is the book's target audience) would want to read about them. Ultimately, the negativity tainted my enjoyment of this book. Still, I am desperately hoping they do a sequel or two to cover the rest of Charles Band's career. Maybe the authors are more into the Full Moon stuff?

The right book written by the wrong people

I grew up in the 1980s, and the cheesy scifi/horror movies produced by Charles Band were a big part of my life. As a lifelong fan of Band and his films, I was overjoyed to finally find a book that gave such a detailed history of his work during the 1980s, including such campy classics as Metalstorm, Ghoulies, and Trancers. The book is a detailed history of the movies made during those years and the people who made them.

What turned me off A LOT about this book was that the three people who wrote it are clearly contemptuous of Band and the kind of movies he makes. The authors never miss a chance to heap their derision on Band's work and many of the people who worked for him, and it gets old really fast. One of Band's early movies is "...little more than a showreel for cheap optical effects." One of the lead actors in a later film is "...as unsightly as he is inert." Director Tim Kincaid gets mercilessly trashed, "the uberhack from New York" being on of the kinder zingers thrown at him throughout the book. I and anyone who reads this book are well aware that Band's movies were not Oscar-worthy. We don't need to hear over and over again about the costume design that is "ghastly to a degree that can hardly be described" or the movie-watching experience that is "nothing more than a comprehensive buttock-shifting workout."

I very much enjoyed learning the treasure trove of historical details, interviews, and trivia about Band's early years, but I found the authors' endless negativity such a turnoff that it knocked my review from five stars to three. Read at your own risk.

The "Empire Pictures" encyclopedia is here

Worth the wait. The people at "Hemlock" have compiled the most thorough account of the weird and wonderful era that "Empire Pictures" thrived in. Dave Jay, and his brave compatriots reviewed every single offering from the Charles Band-led Company. From the '70s to the final output in the early '90s; this is a priceless reference for all lovers of B-Cinema. Especially note-worthy is the inclusion of great interviews from the filmmakers themselves. With insight from Stuart Gordon, David Schmoeller, Ted Nicolau, Courtney B. Vance, Tim Thomerson, and many more. Dave Jay piqued my interest in the subject with his fine article in "HorrorHound" in 2012. Like an appetizer for the 7-course meal, this tome delivers a satisfying read that you will want to revisit again and again.
