Good read but repeats a lot

This was suggested to me as my first book to read before I start looking into what to invest in 2. This is a book that will help change your mindset or open your perspectives of how your money and your life are operating. There are some great ideas in here but the author uses repetition to illustrate his point to you and make sure that he's drooling at home. For myself after after awhile it got a little old and it definitely became clear to me that he could have probably finish the book in 200 pages rather than the 320 he uses. That being said if you are someone who is serious and wants to change your mind about your money this is a fantastic book to start changing your mindset. There are plenty of other books that can teach you how to get into what you want to do but you need to start with your mindset and this is perfect for that.

About the Author
Carol Horton, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in Political Science from the University of Chicago, served on the faculty at Macalester College, and has extensive experience as a research consultant specializing in issues affecting low-income children and families. A Certified Forrest Yoga teacher, she teaches women incarcerated in the Cook County Jail with Yoga for Recovery, and at Chaturanga Holistic Fitness in Chicago. She is the author of "Race and the Making of American Liberalism," and co-editor (with Roseanne Harvey) of "21st Century Yoga: Culture, Politics, and Practice."

A real treat for the analytical yogi...

If Lieutenant Columbo ever wrote a book about yoga, it would read like Yoga PhD. Perusing the culture of modern American yoga with Carol Horton, we're intrigued by nearly everything we see: "spiritual" lines of clothing promoted by manifestly soul-less companies; a chock-full meditation class in the heart of the dairy-belt; a movie starlet glibly declaring that yoga poses are about 2000 years old (recent scholarship demonstrates most aren't much more than 100.)

"I wonder why is it that way!?" the author chuckles, scratching her head. And her iconoclastic answers, like Columbo's, are supported by evidence most of us wouldn't even think of. A poli-sci-professor-turned yogi, Ms. Horton liberally buttresses her own thoughts with the most up-to-date scholarship about yoga as well as insights from other cultural greats who range from Jung and Thoreau to the creator of Nike's "Just do it" campaign.

In essay after essay, Ms. Horton raises tough questions about modern yoga and then skillfully goes through the evidence. When the only honest answers are full of ambiguities, she isn't afraid to say so. I love that!

Take her essays on the history of yoga. There's a brief discussion of the archeological basis for yoga's ancient origins. (It's inconclusive - and what a relief it is to have someone say so.) Then she tells us how Swami Vivekananda brought his vision of yoga to the United States at the turn of the 20th century - the singular "big bang" event from which all of western yoga has arguably proceeded*. At the end, having painted the picture of yoga's history in broad and clear strokes, she creates a conceptual frame to hang it in. It's a frame that highlights the best features in the picture, gives it new meaning.

Which is that we really don't know much for certain about the ancient antecedents of modern yoga. But we do know for sure, even amidst the delightful ambiguities in yoga's history, that we share with our ancient forbears a desire to practice something that helps us to grow. And we also know that contemporary yoga reflects our uniquely modern character: it is freely available worldwide and practiced by tens of millions of people; it blends spirituality with modern science. In this way our yoga is builds upon but is different than anything that came before it. These are roots and differences that would make any practicing yogi proud.

This kind of insight characterizes Ms. Horton's writing elsewhere in the book. Her essays run the gamut of modern concerns from consumerism to body image to psychotherapy, each one delivering fresh insights in a succinct and thoughtful package. And underneath all of them, which makes the book a real delight to read, is a kind of wonderment about the whole shebang of modern yoga.

Here's how she says it in one of her final essays. " When practiced in a way that integrates body, mind, and breath, yoga offers an accessible means of developing an infinitely more healthy and empowering relationship to the body....Even within our soulless landscape of parking lots, prefab buildings, post-industrial detritus, and big-box stores, reconnecting with the deep inner experience of our own embodiment enables us to discover that the world really does retain its essential mystery and magic."

Amen to that! It's why I do yoga, and I'll bet the same is true for millions of others. And so, to this and so much else in the book, one can only thank Ms. Horton. Thanks for getting it so right, so clearly, and for putting it out there for all of us to read.

Yoga Ph.D.?

I appreciate the story the author is trying to tell here, and her discussion of postmodern yoga and yoga culture (as another type of spiritual capitalism - a term she doesn't use but is suggested) as a type of paradox is interesting. That said, I feel like this text wants to be academic and also wants to be a personal essay. In the process, however, it doesn't do either very well. The academic portion feels un-cited and under-researched. The personal essay portion feels shallow and uninteresting. As a reader, I want to know why her story is important to me. I was relieved to reach the end of the book because I knew I wouldn't have to hear her mention "rationality" one more time. Ironically, for someone who is embracing postmodernity as the author suggests she is, I was surprised at how often she referred to herself as a rational - a very modernist concept. Foregoing citation was a mistake in my opinion. There is nothing new or interesting here that one could not find in a variety of other texts. Finally, I still don't see the link with Yoga Ph.D. Is she suggesting that her journey with yoga is equivalent to getting a Ph.D.? If so, the book should have explained this way better as the connection is not at all explicit.

which is its greatest strength and weakness

As others have mentioned in their reviews, this book attempts to cover A LOT of ground, which is its greatest strength and weakness. It is a strength in the sense that it quite soundly introduces and explicates a number of important historical and practical points concerning yoga, which makes for a generally good introduction to the subject. It is a weakness, however, in the sense that its breadth comes at the expense of its depth. As I see it, this is a problem as the book may not be very useful for those who have read even a handful of books on the topic (at this general level of sophistication).

Along this line, the book varies thematically between two contrasting methodologies; it is one part historical overview, and one part intimate memoir of a long-time practitioner of yoga. The first portion has been thoroughly covered elsewhere, and is essentially unneeded. It is the second portion, the insightful recollections of experiences and lessons learned, that struck me as illuminating and at times beautiful. To explain, Horton writes that her purpose for writing this book was to answer the questions, “What is yoga, really? How does it work? Why has it become so popular?” (vii) and “How does yoga as we know it connect to Indian tradition?”. (viii) As such, her memoir-style insights are thoroughly integrated into a greater historical and sociological story. Her ability to navigate this liminal space is admirable.

In answering these questions, the author does a formidable job, blending the personal with the historical, the transition between method being quite transparent, although I think she could have written a lot more on the psychology of yoga. The substratum of yoga is ultimately the immediate experience of incarnate being, so more discussion on her understanding of the structure of the mind-body would have rounded the project out a little more. She generally discusses the metaphysics of classical yoga and how it doesn’t quite transfer over to the modern era, but a discussion of the mind-body qua classical Samkhya-Yoga vis-�-vis the mind-body qua post-Enlightenment materialism and duality is left implied. She does suggest this by generally introducing the Romantics and Transcendentalism, but the leg-work is left to the reader.

What on earth does the title “Yoga Ph.D.” even mean? This wasn’t her dissertation (she has a Ph.D. in political science), and it isn’t even necessarily academic. I suspect her publisher put her up to it.

Over-all, it is a good book and well written at that. As such, it should make for a good introduction to the topic if one is pursuing similar questions as “How does yoga as we know it connect to Indian tradition?” The question itself melds personal practice with history, so it should be no surprise that the book does to.

Destruye desde su inicio y con pruebas s�lidas todo aquello que aprend� en la facultad de Ciencias Sociales y Econ�micas. Soy un defensor del libre mercado, pero al saber por medio de este libro que el "libre mercado de hoy" no es libre (en realidad es un mercado keynesiano mal regulado, sea por alevos�a o no) y que aquel libre mercado de antes muri� hace ya muchos a�os. Me permite de una forma m�s fuerte comprender que ocupa mi pa�s y el mundo. Recomendado aunque para algunos sea un poco inc�modo.

you have no vision of jazz piano until you see the Solo, away from the group who's keepeen the beat, and laying down the bass for you, this just frees you up a bit, Monk created his greea-test solos in the group, all those spiky chords, Ab-D-G, or cd-Ab-Db,also the suspension(S) of the beat attest to his interest in expanding what we call music, But if you've never heard Solo you really haven't heard anything, Also Cecil Taylor, needs a review of Solo, what he creates, the bonfires he sets with the Solo Piano,

But Monk equally did Solo Work,n'had a way of practicing, taking only one song and playing it for hours, to see what was in it, He did this with all the tunes here, and I guess you can say that what is here was the best reading of possibly I don't know 10 different reading of each tune. Still you get the interesting dimensions of what Monk could do with harmonies, and chords,-flatted and sharped 5ths and Ninths, is where the tension comes from, in a Blues progression you need to sharp the Ninth, as in C-Major, Tonic Chord is now E-Bb-D#, and F-Chord, is F-A-B-Eb, greet stuff.When he Went Solo he kept the traditional stride Left Hand, something if you look for it in group Work it remains but, He began to use his Left Hand in the Group as rhythm as percussion products, with cluster chords, even in "Bright Mississippi", he uses his whole arm for accents.

My favorite here is "everything happens to me", sums up the state of the globe now for us down here, you can play this over and over again and still find different voices between the hands, I found myself developing from what is written out, and it is fairly faithful to the recording, well one of them in that Monk always took multiple taks on all the Tunes herein. "Don't Blame me" as well, has great dissonances, that you can develop even more, and the classic now, "just a gigolo', who would think this Vegas tune could be made into a classic, but again the dissonances are incredible, it lives forever because of the unresolved tensions you have here;and there are more hesitations in Live than in the transcription; I found that you can really make your own half hour solos from what is written here, and apply the chords in and around the other tunes, like a paradigm that lives throughout all the tunes herein.There are other more strenuus as "devil and Deep Blue Sea", difficult to bring off, and Gershwin's "Liza" you really need to work with vision. . . This is the best book I've found thus far on Monk or any jazz transcriptions, the other are too skeletle,too obvious to do you any good, if you really want to learnnn jazz. But please listen to Monk play without the music first, and bring that experience internally inside yourself, then you can go and play from this Book. . . it will change the way you think about music. . .

Close to the real deal

With all transcriptions it is difficult to know from which recording they are transcribed. The book is at least a great starting point for those of us that are striving to understand his style. These are solo piano transcriptions so they do not translate well into trio work. Would recommend this book to any serious student of Monk.

Sends chills down my spine to this day

I know a lot of these Choose Your Own Adventures have been re-released in the past few years with all new artwork and revised details.
All I can say is 'The Mystery of Chimney Rock' needs no revision whatsoever. I am 38 years old. This book scared me as a kid and
it freaks me out now. The artwork from Paul Granger is vivid and creepy. And while this type of story has been told many times, this
book does it in such a way that you get goosebumps.

I highly recommend the old school copy of this book if you can find it.

One of the very best--brilliant

This is one of the very best books written in English on the history of music. It is not the easiest book in terms of the level of knowledge required by the reader, but the writing is very good and sparkles in comparison to many music history books which are more like textbooks.
The book is written as a series of little stories that are presented more or less in chronological order. If you are interested in the history of Western music, this book will present you with real insights from a musicologist who interprets the sources in historical context.
There are more fascinating details per page about music history in this book than any other book of its type, and there are quite a few pages. A great read for any serious student of music or professional musician. It can be used as a sort of mini-encyclopedia as you can for example just refer to the articles on Beethoven or Mozart--but there is much more. A minor criticism is that some of the language needs to be updated. A gem.

For a "concise", this book is remarkable in detail from ancient times music up to and including early baroque era. The blending of historical context in that stretch is excellent. Worst flaw in the book is its lopsidedness to the history of Western Music prior to middle 19th century, despite being published in the late 1970s. Perfect title for a re-print and face lift would be "Concise History of Early Music", while dropping the material on 20th Century altogether. That would be a perfect piece of work without the pretension of covering "History of Music". Excellent music history book if you are accepting that it is highly focused on Early Western music development and no where else offers same treatment.

Good insights, but be careful of giving away your power

I've been watching the work of Teal for a couple of years and I'd consider myself neither a "Tealer" nor a "hater," just a neutral observer. There are some terrific insights in this book, yet I can't help but feel that The Completion Process is complicated and hard to follow. Personally, I feel that 18 steps is a long process and hard to practically implement. I will be taking some steps from this process however, but not all. I do like that it was mentioned in the book that innately, you are Whole at a Soul level, this is important to remember.

Also, I've noticed that there's a very cult-like mentality surrounding Teal, which is a bit unnerving. Although she is inspiring, please remember that YOU are divine as well. Don't rely on anyone to be your savior, guru or leader. It's tempting to project your divinity onto another person like Teal (and this is what eventually creates brainwashed groups of people), but remember that you are just as beautiful, powerful and wise. You are the one you've been searching for. Teal is merely a messenger. Remember that. ;)

One of the most important books I have ever read

I feel this is one of the most important books I have ever read in my life. This book shows the importance of deeply accepting and embracing yourself, just the way you are--emotional pain and all. I spent well over a decade in deep depression, feeling dead and numb inside. Yet I deeply desired to find the cause of my brokenness and find healing. I took the mystical path, and spent years meditating and doing other complimentary spiritual practices. I studied and practiced teachings that explain how important it is to not resist your pain; to allow it to be, and experience it deeply. However, I was not able to do it. When other teachings said to be present with my pain, I took that to mean I should simply be there with it and tolerate it. But that is not enough. The wounded places in yourself are not looking to be merely tolerated. They are looking for love.

This book takes a deep, loving approach. In it we find that we need not search for healing, because by believing we need healing, we continue to tell ourselves that something is wrong with us the way we are. This only causes more pain and deepens the wounds. What we are really searching for is wholeness. We give not only our full attention to the pain within us: we give our hearts to the pain. Emotional and psychological pain is not some inanimate thing that we should get rid of. The pain within us is wounded aspects of ourselves that are crying out for love and attention. And so we must give that loving attention to ourselves. By giving loving attention to the broken aspects of ourselves, instead of suppressing the pain, we introduce and integrate them back into our conscious selves, thereby becoming whole. We must always do this when we are in pain, no matter how long it takes or how many times we must allow and embrace inner turmoil. As the author puts it, most humans are fair-weather friends to themselves. They are open to themselves and all their feelings completely when things seem to be going well, and when they feel good. But when they feel bad, they are resistant to those feelings and always avoiding themselves, via things like addictions, etc. So we are learning to no longer be fair-weather friends to ourselves, but to be completely open and accepting of ourselves unconditionally. With this as our foundation we can successfully do the completion process.

The completion process is an active imagination process that facilitates going deeper into the places in ourselves that have experienced trauma, and providing validation and comfort to your wounded inner child. In this process you meet your needs in any way that is necessary, and encounter profound emotional relief. The process gives opportunities for suppressed memories to arise and be dealt with as well. When encountering old traumas within, you can give the opportunity for old memories to come up if needed, and then work with them further. If no memories come up, you can simply validate the experience you are having and practice what the author calls "emotional vipassana." She explains that these initial steps of the process--validation and emotional vipassana--alone are enough to experience reintegration. I personally find myself not being flooded with a lot of memories when I do this practice, but these basic methods still stand when dealing with trauma and pain. I can validate my experience, give broken parts of me an opportunity to fully express themselves and be fully experienced and felt. I can be there unconditionally for these feelings, and in that way meet my own needs. This is the heart of the practice, and this is what each step of it is about.

The process is eighteen steps long, which may seem intimidating. However, as you absorb and become familiar with the steps, you will see that they really do flow together naturally. So although the author has broken it down into these eighteen steps, it is actually seamless and simple.

The book explains in depth how the subconscious works, and how life events and other occurrences act as triggers for suppressed pain. It explains how we can come fully into an intimate relationship with ourselves and prepares us to go deeply into our inner world. And when we think we have gone deep, the book explains how to go deeper still! We come out feeling whole, more alive, more compassionate and loving toward others, more excited about life, and most importantly, more loving and compassionate toward ourselves.

The reading of this book has effectively ended the years of fear I carried--fear of myself. I spent years constantly suppressing and running from the pain within me, and it only grew worse and worse. This book gave me the gift of reconciliation. I am no longer afraid of my feelings; no longer afraid of myself. I feel more and more whole every daily. I am so thankful!

I have noticed that there is a lot of criticism about the author that goes on in the spiritual community. But whatever has gone on in her personal life is none of my business.

The information in this book is truly liberating. Every word rings true, and clearly flows from a place of deep spiritual insight. It is about self-empowerment! It is about self love, and true healing, which is wholeness! This book is amazing. Accept yourself deeply, just the way you are. Then do an act of self-love, and read this book!

Courageous and Powerful

As the saying goes "If you're going through hell, don't stop! keep going." The Completion Process can take you to the other side of hell and allow you to finally live the glorious life you are meant to live. I know because I have been there.

To mix another metaphor, it would be foolish to try and cross a vast desert alone but with Teal as your companion and all of those courageous enough to experience the rich benefits of the Completion Process we will travel in the safety of a caravan of powerful souls.

About the Author
Talat S. Halman is a leading translator of Turkish literature into English. Before establishing the Department of Turkish Literature at Bilkent University, Ankara, he taught at Columbia University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and New York University. Halman is author and editor of more than sixty books, including Contemporary Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Drama, and Suleyman the Magnificent Poet. He is editor of the Journal of Turkish Literature.

Jayne L. Warner is director of research at the Institute for Aegean Prehistory in Greenwich, Connecticut.
