Slam's got it going on
By Angelia Powell
This is the best MILF/step mother and son erotica I've read to date. This is the first books I've read by this author and I must say I'm highly impressed. I got this through Kindle Unlimited and I read it through twice before I turned it back in. I will most definitely be checking more out from Suzi Slam. I'm not going to go in to the storylines because that will spoil everything. Check it out for your self.

Chestnut Street, by Maeve Binchy

Just round the corner from St Jarlath's Crescent (featured in Minding Frankie) is Chestnut Street. Here, the lives of the residents are revealed in Maeve Binchy's wonderfully compelling tales: Bucket Maguire, the window cleaner, who must do more than he bargained for to protect his son. Nessa Byrne, who's aunt comes to visit from America for six weeks every summer and turns the house - and Nessa's world - upside down.

Lilian, the generous girl with a big heart, and the fianc not everyone approves of. And Melly, whose gossip about the neighbours leads to trouble in the form of a fortune teller, 'Madame Magic'...

No one rivals Maeve Binchy for stories of warmth, kindness, love, loss - and life not always turning out as expected.

One of the World's Best Storytellers Remains with Her Readers in "Chestnut Street"
By E. M. Griffith
***this review is based on an uncorrected proof of the soon-to-be-published hardcover edition***

A big thank you to Gordon Snell, Maeve's beloved husband, and to Alfred A. Knopf for allowing us to enjoy another brilliant short story collection by Binchy. 'Chestnut Street' (due to be released spring 2014) isn't a novel, but rather 36 short stories written by the author over a period of years about the residents of a fictional neighborhood in Ireland. Since my sons were very young, I've told them every person they'll ever meet has a story to tell. Everyone is someone's family member or friend, and we all lead interesting lives in one way or another. No one is insignificant. Maeve Binchy had a unique gift; the characters she wrote about felt real... as if the reader knew them from some facet of daily life. Such is the case when you read 'Chestnut Street'.

Joyce, for example, could be a friend or co-worker as she gets ready for a dinner with Leonard and Sally, who are trying to fix her up with new neighbor, Norman. Or there's Kevin, who drives a cab... how often do we wonder about the lives of those working jobs that often render them too easily invisible? Molly is trying to regain her footing after a heartbreaking divorce. Nuala can't quite accept her daughter, Katie's, fianc. 'Chestnut Street' illustrates everyday events so we readers can still glimpse the magic in the mundane Binchy was so expert at describing. She understood life and people as few people do.

I highly recommend adding this short story collection to a shelf of Maeve Binchy's best works. You'll want to hang on to 'Chestnut Street' long after you've finished reading it the first time, because you'll pour a cup of tea or mug of coffee, open its pages again, and snuggle in for quiet, peaceful moments throughout the years. Much in the same way we revisit photo albums or scrapbooks and smile at remembered stories.

If You're a Maeve Binchy Fan ...
By Loves Books in MD
.... then you know what to expect & you will enjoy this book. What the reader should know is that this isn't a novel, but a collection of short stories about people who live on Chestnut Street. The stories don't really intertwine much, other than a random comment about a neighbor mentioned in a prior chapter. If you are someone who has heard about the wonderful books written by Maeve Binchy and want to read your first, I would recommend you start with a different book - one of her complete novels. While Chestnut Street is standard Maeve Binchy with unique but believable characters, her novels are much more engrossing with interwoven stories and you're not starting and stopping with each chapter.

I enjoyed Chestnut Street for several reasons - first, it was no different than the previous books written by Maeve Binchy with all her insights about people and characters and giving you a lot of story in a short shapter - what an imagination and knowledge of people the woman had! While reading this book, I realized that one of the things that I liked about her books was that the really good, humble and often largely overlooked or used people seemed to triumph in the end and the not-so-good, self-satisfied or bad people typically got their just desserts, sometimes served by the really good people - and this is most satisfying.

I knew this book had been put together after her passing and was a little afraid it wouldn't be up to her usual storytelliing standards, but I have to say it drew me in and kept me happily entertained on a long day when I needed something that would hold my interest - and I was not disappointed. I am sad that there will be no more Maeve Binchy books to look forward to, but am glad they gave us Chestnut Street. So as I started my review - if you're a Maeve Binchy fan, you'll enjoy this one - maybe not as much as we'd have loved to have had a complete novel, but this was a nice, unexpected gift.

Truly, undoubtedly Binchy
By D. Williams
Maeve Binchy passed away in 2012, but, fortunately, her husband Gordon Snell decided, after many “not now’s” from Ms. Binchy while she lived, the time was right to publish this collection of short stories.

CHESTNUT STREET is a collection of thirty-six short stories all set on Chestnut Street, which, as Mr. Snell points out in the preface, is a fictional street in Dublin. Each story is from the point of view of a different resident on this horseshoe-shaped street, some adults, some teenagers, some children. Those who are familiar with Binchy’s work have met a few of these friends before and should be happy to see them again. The stories vary in length; one is a mere five pages, but some are almost novellas. I would say that the average length is about ten to fifteen pages – a fairly typical length for a short story. The stories are all about life itself and often have a lesson, but they aren’t preachy – simply warm and wise, in Binchy’s singular way.

Readers will have to keep in mind that these stories were not all written at the same time; some are older than others. Mr. Snell notes in the preface that Ms. Binchy wrote these stories over a long period of time. Ms. Binchy gives readers just enough information to let us know when we might be in the 1960’s or when we might be in the 2010’s, and many of the character types, incidents, and lessons learned hold true for any time.

I had hoped that Mr. Snell would find some more of Ms. Binchy’s work lurking in her desk drawer or computer files, and I’m glad he did. I hope he’ll keep looking for even more!

Eye-Opening, Inspiring Collection!
By M. Cristina R. B. Gallardo
The first time I read this compilation, I was blown away! I realized that the great minds of the western world had been greatly influenced by the sacred texts of India. Because of this book, my desire to learn, to read, to study had increased manifold. What I had read of western philosophy had been merely glimpses of the awe-inspiring wisdom held by the great Rishis of India and passed on through thousands of years through the Vedas, Upanishads, and Gitas. Now that I have gone back to the source, everything started to make sense. This book has been the gateway to that knowledge, the spark that ignited an ongoing passion for my search for truth. Thank you, Mr. Salil Gewali.

Amazon.com Review
Tyrone Slothrop, a GI in London in 1944, has a big problem. Whenever he gets an erection, a Blitz bomb hits. Slothrop gets excited, and then (as Thomas Pynchon puts it in his sinister, insinuatingly sibilant opening sentence), "a screaming comes across the sky," heralding an angel of death, a V-2 rocket. The novel's title, Gravity's Rainbow, refers to the rocket's vapor arc, a cruel dark parody of what God sent Noah to symbolize his promise never to destroy humanity again. History has been a big trick: the plan is to switch from floods to obliterating fire from the sky.

Slothrop's father was an unwitting part of the cosmic doublecross. To provide for the boy's future Harvard education, he took cash from the mad German scientist Laszlo Jamf, who performed Pavlovian experiments on the infant Tyrone. Laszlo invented Imipolex G, a new plastic useful in rocket insulation, and conditioned Tyrone's privates to respond to its presence. Now the grown-up Tyrone helplessly senses the Imipolex G in incoming V-2s, and his military superiors are investigating him. Soon he is on the run from legions of bizarre enemies through the phantasmagoric horrors of Germany.

That's just the Imipolex G tip of the shrieking vehicle that is Pynchon's book. It's pretty much impossible to follow a standard plot; one must have faith that each manic episode is connected with the great plot to blow up the world with the ultimate rocket. There is not one story, but a proliferation of characters (Pirate Prentice, Teddy Bloat, Tantivy Mucker-Maffick, Saure Bummer, and more) and events that tantalize the reader with suggestions of vast patterns only just past our comprehension. You will enjoy Pynchon's cartoon inferno far more if you consult Steven Weisenburger's brief companion to the novel, which sorts out Pynchon's blizzard of references to science, history, high culture, and the lowest of jokes. Rest easy: there really is a simple reason why Kekul von Stradonitz's dream about a serpent biting its tail (which solved the structure of the benzene molecule) belongs in the same novel as the comic-book-hero Plastic Man.

Pynchon doesn't want you to rest easy with solved mysteries, though. Gravity's Rainbow uses beautiful prose to induce an altered state of consciousness, a buzz. It's a trip, and it will last. --Tim Appelo

Review
Novel by Thomas Pynchon, published in 1973. The sprawling narrative comprises numerous threads having to do either directly or tangentially with the secret development and deployment of a rocket by the Nazis near the end of World War II. Lieutenant Tyrone Slothrop is an American working for Allied Intelligence in London. Agents of the Firm, a clandestine military organization, are investigating an apparent connection between Slothrop's erections and the targeting of incoming V-2 rockets. As a child, Slothrop was the subject of experiments conducted by a Harvard professor who is now a Nazi rocket scientist. Slothrop's quest for the truth behind these implications leads him on a nightmarish journey of either historic discovery or profound paranoia, depending on his own and the reader's interpretation. The novel won the National Book Award for fiction in 1974. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Avoid Penguin's Deluxe Edition (too many typos)
By PPN
Reading Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow is hard enough without deletions, typos, and occasional rewording of the authors original work. But that's what you get with this so-called "Deluxe Edition" put out by Penguin in 2006.

Starting GR I realized I wasn't getting the full story (even though this is Pynchon), so I borrowed a 1973 edition and started comparing it to my Penguin "Deluxe Edition". Within the first 100 pages I found at least a dozen typos, rewordings, and just plain deletions.

An example, pp. 139-140, last sentence:

...Your task, in the dreams, is often to [cross under the trees through the shadows before something hap] pens.

The portion in the brackets is totally absent in this copy. Deletions like this make for a completely incomprehensible novel and ruin the author's work.

Note that my rating doesn't reflect my opinion of GR, just the "Deluxe Edition" Penguin has put forth (2006 ed.). Frankly, Penguin's QA/proofing department should be ashamed for putting out such a turd.

For the love of the Mistress of the Night, please, avoid this edition!!!

A Challenge To All Lazy People
By jjreid@chat.carleton.ca
When I first read this book I did so without wanting to put any effort into it. I was lazy. I didn't bother to look up any of the historical, scientific, or pop cultural references. Moreover, if a difficult word popped up I didn't bother to reach for a dictionary to find out what it meant. Often I'd think to myself, 'Who is Clausewitz?' or 'What is a narodnik?', and then I'd move on without finding out what these terms actually meant ( even though I could have found an answer right away by simply typing any of these terms into an internet search engine ). The process was arduous, painful, and frustrating. I hated this book. I simply didn't know what he was saying because I couldn't put anything into context. The second time I read Gravity's Rainbow I purchased an annotated guide, while also making an effort to find some of the more obscure references myself. Though I can't claim to understand everything he was saying, I did grow comfortable scrabbling about Pynchon's exotic little universe. I came to respect the genius of this book, both in a thematic and artistic sense. I believe that one of Pynchon's goals is to dare the reader into reading this book. Simply put, he wants us to work. Kierkegaard said that being a Christian should not be an easy task. The same is true, I think, in literature. For, the safer literature gets, the more it comes to resemble TV. Yes, on the surface this book is difficult, even pretentious. But if you work at it, that is, actually make an effort to understand Pynchon's somewhat obscure references and his abstruse vocabulary, the results are most rewarding. Simply put, he's not going to spoonfeed literature to his audience. Nor, as a reader, should you want to be spoonfed.

Tyron Slothrop, who was attending the wild party in question in the Herman Goering casino as part of his search for the Schwatzgerat--the V2 rocket (serial no. 00000) which carries the mysterious Imipolex G device--all over wartime Europe, while the British secret service, and assorted others, search for *him*.

Why? You'll have to read the book. Along the way, he meets--among many others--a British captain with black-market connections that allow him to have fresh bananas in London's wartime winter in return for homegrown "magic mushroom" drugs; an African tribe whose members serve in the SS as V2 crews; an insane American Major whose solidiers sing diry limmericks about the V2's various components; an Italian nobleman--and a British Brigadier--with odd sexual practices (even by Pynchon's standards); and that's just the start of it.

The adventures of Lt. Slothrop in this mad looking-glass world are funny, amusing, bizzare, and complex. What's more--and this is what makes the novel a masterpiece--Pynchon integrates so many actual facts into his fictional world that it makes it and its inhabitants have much more versimilitude than the people described in most *non*-fiction works about WWII. Slothrop is more "real" than the Hitler we read about in most biographies of the man; his friends and enemies more real than, say, the defendants in Nuremberg are in most books about the trial.

If Pynchon speaks, say, of a car used by a lieutenant in a specific sub-department of the German Army in 1944, you can be damn sure that particular car model was in fact used by just such lieutenants at the time in reality; that pynchon took into account the wartime shortages that made the car's quality to deteriorate from 1944 to 1941; and that the lieutenant's resentment of this would be relevant to the plot.

To be sure, the lieutenant might then want to kill Slothrop in order to fulfill an anient prophecy based on Mayan star charts (which you can bet are also accurately portrayed); or to have a homosexual affair with him; or to do any number of bizzare or absurd things that one would expect in the looking-glass world where the novel is set. But that is just what makes this novel so great: Pycnhon doesn't research to teach us facts about WWII--even if a lot of the facts he puts in the novel are probably unknown even to WWII history buffs (like myself). He *uses* his research to create his funny, bizzare, and incredibly engaging world.

Read it--perferably, with a glass of wine (or something stronger) at your side. You will laugh, chortle, be shocked, and be amazed. Rarely had a better novel been written.

RUBY KROSS

Who is Corbin Sterling to me? That's what people always want to know. He was my first friend. He was the love of my life. And he was my only heartbreak. The problem is that I love the big jerk, and I've refused to give up our friendship, even if it does mean it'll eventually ruin me. So, to answer the question... Corbin Fucking Sterling is the Bane of my existence; that's what he is.

CORBIN STERLING

People tell you to learn from your mistakes, but the problem isn't learning from them; it's undoing them. I wish I could go back and undo a lot of shit. Maybe then I wouldn't feel tortured every time Ruby calls me her "best friend."
This might be the last chance I have to make everything right, but she's sure as hell not going to make it easy. The games we play will either finally stop, or turn into what I've always wanted. This time I won't fuck it up. Hopefully.

Hero was a disappointment
By lucy
Contain spoilers....

I've so looked forward to Corbin's book and I happen to LOVE this author but it just didn't do it for me. Too much of the same trope I could have found in other books. I came to expect a super alpha hero who cherished his heroines and who goes to depth of hell to prove his love and showed how sorry he was. This book didn't quite deliver on that. The hero, Corbin, broke the heroine's heart and trust way too much for me to keep rooting for him. There was just too much stalling and juvenile games on both sides so that they can avoid the big talk of why their relationship crumbled. The story wrapped up way too quickly for me to get any sense of satisfaction of seeing the hero truly repent and proved himself a changed man.

Corbin. Sigh. He was a just a big idiot and coward IMO. He had a good thing going with Ruby with then were younger and they started dating. But as young men tends to do, he didn't appreciate what he had so he went and ruin it. He broke up with the heroine (for a third time), claiming he not's ready for anything deeper with her and goes to bangs another chick the day after. I was so heartbroken along with Ruby when she found him with another girl. I mean, I was hoping for it to be a misunderstanding or fake setup. But no, he really did dumped her, got wasted drunk and screwed another chick. Lames excuses that we see in so many other books. "I was young, a stupid kid, you deserve better than me"...blah blah blah. I could give a rat's behind that he was too young to be equipped to handle his emotions. Or that he didn't believe in everlasting love and really was doing the heroine a favor. Grow some balls buddy. She was young too, she didn't step out like a weenie for fear of love. And even though it wasn't "cheating" as they were broken up it was still messed up in my eyes what he did. Poor Ruby to catch him in the act, I would have walked away and never look back. But he tripled dare her to forgive him (rolls eyes) as he's running after her.... fresh from screwing the other chick. The heroine does, thus started the whole ridiculous games they played for the next 6 years of triple daring each other instead of owning up to their feelings.

So that set the precedent for the book and just taint any joy I had looked forward to earlier. I mean, I get that there has to be a huge conflict. For us to eventually see the hero redeeming himself in the end. But Corbin just fell short to me. Even to the end. Aside from him breaking up with the heroine again and again, he took her for granted way too long for me to really respect or admire him. His come to Jesus moment wayyyy too late in the book. And for Ruby to suck it up constantly and forgive him every time he ditches her.... because she rather have any piece of him than none at all was CRAZY. I would have shown him the door long ago. Throughout the book, they use their silly games of triple dares just to get one up the other and hide their true feelings. It was annoying and just bogged down the story as I needed to see more of their relationship pan out. Not seeing them playing dare games to outdo the other. Leave the games to Rye and Brin, they are the king and queen of pranks. It fits with their story and relationship. In here, it was like a plot device just to dragged out the big "talk" they should've had 6 years ago. When he royally screwed up. Ruby gave Corbin way too many passes in this book but I suppose the fifth time's the charm. But for me, it was wasted years of waiting on a guy to finally "man the hell up". Corbin just didn't measure up to the other heroes. I really hated whenever he ran out on her and she forgives him so easily. Especially in the last one when he abandoned her and dumped her via text. He bailed yet again when things got rough. By the time he was willing to fight for her, I already grew tired of his b.s. and just exasperated with the secret box. Just end the misery already.

Parts that I did enjoy about the book was revisiting the whole gang and catching up with their lives (Wren & Rye, u the most!). Love that we still get the humor, the deep love and friendship that remained strong throughout each book. I only wish we have more scenes of Corbin and Ruby developing their relationship in a realistic way aside from the triple daring games. Yes, I get that it was their "Thing". But the way their relationship transitioned from games to sex real quick was just unfulfilling and anticlimactic.

I still think C.M. Owen is an amazing author and capable of writing some great possessively devoted heroes (minus Corbin). So I'll probably continue on to the next as I desperately want to read Britt's book.

Shaking that Ass.....
By lainey DS
Triple Dare:

This book absolutely broke me in so many emotional ways.
Corbin is such a mystery to everyone on the outside he is the quiet on who is always there to listen to anyone but never shares his feelings instead he kept them bottled up to himself and writing out his emotions on paper and storing them in his secret box.
Ruby is a character who I absolutely adored; she is strong willed and anyone not close to her thinks she is tough and almost bitch like. Ruby is adored by her father who saved her being an attention device (so to speak) by her manipulative mother when being hospitalized numerous times from her life threatening nut allergy.
Together Ruby and Corbin were complete, but without each other they both were broken and this book definitely BROKE me in the most heart wrenching beautiful way possible. I was literally snot ball crying….. Corbin passed out in Ruby’s entry way, Corbin digging up all his boxes (through tiled floor), reading Corbin’s entries completely Broke me, it was gut wrenching and tore my heart apart…. Yes i was snot ball crying again. Those boxes ripped my heart open and heartbreak of losing not only the love of their life but also losing a best friend.
Laugh out loud moments were also a huge stand out with fairies have to be sparkly, spray cheese girl, Corbin the closet chick flick lover, looks like you don’t “manscape” now and Banana girl….Shake that Ass
The vibrating panties had me in hysterics, so did the brownies scene!!! My brother is marrying my sister was absolute genius!! While there are so many hilarious scenes throughout this book with all the Triple Dares I Flove the fact that this book has so much emotion and tore my heart to absolute shreds.
Cm Owens always out does herself and never disappoints, truly amazing book on so many levels!! Thank you so much for an Amazing read!!!

The Sterling Shore series is one of my favorite series ever
By Kerry Fletcher
The Sterling Shore series is one of my favorite series ever. These stories get better and better with every one i read. You would think there would be some kind of repeat by now but nope!! This author is so awesome she keeps dreaming up new stuff!!!

This is Corbin Sterling and Ruby Cross' story. Corbin has always been the ladies man of the Sterling boys always flitting around with different girls and doing silly stuff with his cousins and getting arrested. He's always appeared to not have a care in the world and to be honest up till now we've not really seen much of him. This is his story and you realize that anything you thought you knew was completely wrong and was only a shallow surface he hid behind. He's been friends with Ruby since they were kids. Always best friends sticking together but in all honesty he kinda always walked all over Ruby and she gave in to his every need. You would think being like this you would feel Ruby is weak. She is anything but weak believe me the only person she bows to is Corbin but trust me she gets him back plenty in their Triple Dares i'll just say Twerk and leave it at that. Once you read you'll know!

This book takes you on a massive roller-coaster of emotions. From the start there is an undercurrent to the book that slowly reveals what is under the surface. The highs are just awesome the Triple Dares had me crying laughing and of course if there are dares and pranks going on previous characters Brin and Rye have to be in them! The constant undercurrent makes you feel a little tense and really unsure that it will turn out ok in the end. I got pretty scared there for a while they would not end up together. The chemistry between them is off the charts but something or someone keeps getting in the way or Corbin screws up spectacularly. The scene after Corbin accidentally drinks her dads beer is probably one of the funniest things i have ever read. probably the most sexy too. But then come the lows. I can happily admit that i cried for the last quarter of the book. It had built and built highs and lows, lows and highs and then, then everything just explodes!! I had gone through the book in all honesty wanting to smack Corbin round the head and tell him he was an idiot and should grow up!! Then... then he breaks... something comes out that just breaks him from the inside out. I gotta say i broke there right alongside him, shattered in fact. I had also spent the book falling in love with Ruby and broke for her too. It was an amazing twist in the book and i blubbed my eyes out so much i had to keep stopping so i could see!

After being shattered into a million pieces i was put back together and made to feel whole again. The ending left me feeling very satisfied i just loved every single second of the whole book.

I can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone. It can be read as a standalone but you would so be missing out by not reading the rest of the series. Shot straight to the top of my favorite books ever!!!

American Slavery: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions), by Heather Andrea Williams

Europeans, Africans, and American Indians practiced slavery long before the first purchase of a captive African by a white land-owner in the American colonies; that, however, is the image of slavery most prevalent in the minds of Americans today. This Very Short Introduction begins with the Portuguese capture of Africans in the 1400s and traces the development of American slavery until its abolition following the Civil War. Historian Heather Andrea Williams draws upon the rich recent scholarship of numerous highly-regarded academics as well as an analysis of primary documents to explore the history of slavery and its effects on the American colonies and later the United States of America. Williams examines legislation that differentiated American Indians and Africans from Europeans as the ideology of white supremacy flourished and became an ingrained feature of the society. These laws reflected the contradiction of America's moral and philosophical ideology that valorized freedom on one hand and justified the enslavement of a population deemed inferior on another. She explores the tense and often violent relationships between the enslaved and the enslavers, and between abolitionists and pro-slavery advocates as those who benefited from the institution fought to maintain and exert their power.

Williams is attentive to the daily labors that enslaved people performed, reminding readers that slavery was a system of forced labor with economic benefits that produced wealth for a new nation, all the while leaving an indelible mark on its history.

Perhaps a book like this one could lead to some very important connections ...
By Voice of Zip
Splendid! This book should be read by EVERY middle-school and high-school student in the country. Instead of the No Child Left Behind debacle and now the fluffy Common Core, why not not begin our students' education with truth instead of the romanticized, self-aggrandizing swiss cheese that passes for history in our schools. Perhaps a book like this one could lead to some very important connections to how we treat people globally as well as locally. Bring this into a Ward Churchill, David Stannard, Noam Comsky, and Howard Zinn mix and you will have a substantially different view of our history.

Informative. The authors come from a clear position. But, it does give a good explanation of slavery's legacy in America.
